History

MORE THAN 200 YEARS OF TRADITION

In 1809

In order to pay off war debts, in 1809 the municipality of Burkheim sold the "Heilig-Kreuz-Äcker" (Holiday Cross fields), named after the already half-ruined chapel of the "Heiligen Kreuz" ("Holy Cross"), to Ignaz Jäger. In its place he built the "Kreuz" inn, which was later continued by his son Franz-Michael Jäger and, after he emigrated, by his brother-in-law Emmanuel Gschwender. To this day, a cross commemorates the small chapel to which the people of Burkheim made their supplication processions when the still untamed Rhine threatened to flood the lower town.

In 1850

After the straightening of the Rhine in 1840-50, the road to Breisach was no longer at risk from flooding and a time-consuming detour was no longer necessary, the Kreuz innkeeper and local council member Emmanuel Gschwender set up a letter and postal service in 1850. This is how the inn got its double name "Kreuz-Post".

In 1901

In 1901, Ernst and Maria Gschwender took over the Burkheim post office in their inn. After her husband's death in 1947, Maria continued to run the post office business alone, while her son-in-law Eugen Gehr took care of the catering.

In 1953

After her husband's death, Olga, daughter of Ernst and Maria Gschwender, continued to run the "Kreuz-Post". She renovated and expanded the guest rooms and guest rooms.

In 1962

In 1962, Olga's son Ernst Gehr took over the inn together with his wife Hannelore. Olga Gehr continued to run the post office, but after her retirement in 1970 she handed it over to other hands.

In 1970

The numerous holidaymakers, but also the local regulars, should feel at home. That is why Ernst Gehr began to renovate the house from the ground up in 1970. The guild room for farmers and winegrowers was set up in the former post office.

In 1980

The “Kreuz-Post” developed with tourism, as tourism was still called at the time. In 1980, another renovation was started. The Breisach architect Mittl managed to combine tradition and modern comfort without breaking the style. The guest room now had 85 seats, and the adjoining room had space for 55 guests. There were also comfortable guest rooms with 27 beds and a sun terrace just for house guests. And then the next generation, son Reiner Gehr, took the master chef exam in Bad Reichenhall.

In 1990

1990 marks the expansion of the “Kreuz-Post” from a guest house to a country hotel: guest rooms are expanded again, the “Lazarus-von-Schwendi-Stube”, a room for small parties and conferences, is added. The wine and beer bar “Poststüble” invites you to socialize with two bowling alleys. A garden restaurant is created in the inner courtyard, the kitchen is expanded and new parking spaces are created.

The “Kreuz-Post” is also a founding member of Posthotels Deutschland e.V. and a member of the Kaiserstuhl Gastronomic Circle.

In 1993

In 1993, Reiner Gehr married Isabelle Schmidt from Alsace. The two trained chefs not only brought joy to their profession, but also experience from many good establishments at home and abroad to the family business.

In 1994

In 1994, the restaurant was remodeled again. In place of the old barn, a guest house is built with 16 modern rooms, a balcony, an elevator and the "Jörg-Wickram-Stube", another conference and breakfast room. The distillery is moved to an annex at the end of the bowling alley and the meadow becomes a small hotel park. The "Kreuz-Post" is thus the first hotel in the largest wine-growing community in Baden-Württemberg that can accommodate and pamper 50 guests.

In 1998

On December 25, 1998, the first guests moved into the new annex opposite the hotel. Five comfortable rooms with suite character set standards in comfort and design.

In 2000

On January 1, 2000, Reiner and Isabelle Gehr took over the management of the hotel to continue it in the spirit of the previous generations.

In 2002

The house was given a new look. The main building was carefully restored based on old templates and pictures from the turn of the century.

In 2007

Trees were planted on 10,000 square meters to the south of the hotel. A park was created on the lawn with a playground for children and a garden hut for casual relaxation.

In 2008

The young generation brings new momentum! The inner courtyard is roofed over and converted into an atrium with an open fireplace. In the new lounge, guests can enjoy the sunset over Burkheim, and in the garden restaurant they can relax with a view of the Kaiserstuhl.

In 2009

The Kreuz-Post celebrates its 200th birthday!

In 2011

In addition to the classic touring bikes, the Kreuz-Post now also provides its guests with e-bikes - making the Kaiserstuhl bike tour even more fun.

In 2015

After almost two years of planning and construction, the new wellness area opens at Christmas. The site of the former bowling alley is now home to the first spa on the Kaiserstuhl with a moonshine sauna, relaxation rooms, beauty area, pool and spacious lawn.

In addition to free storage in the bike shed, cyclists can also rent e-bikes.
